Here we go...

Went to the Lecture on Thursday, listened to a bit of a history about Communications and some of the fore-thinkers and important minds that have shaped the study of this subject with there particular words, wisdoms and insights.

We were also treated to Le Jetee. A cool movie, with a cool idea and yet made very simply and by the looks of it very cheaply. I had no idea one of my favourite movies- '12 Monkeys' had taken it's main idea from this very film. I was blown away by that fact, and still cannot understand how I did not hear about this sooner. All things considered and as we're discussing in this course with the Communication Technology available to us, I thought that this important piece of information, would of been and should be; common knowledge.

Signifier = The Sign eg. A road sign.

Signified = The Road eg. The Road corresponding to the sign.

Around 1900 Ferdinand de Suassare started off these type of studies when, he started to analyse and concentrate on studying these semiotics. The signs, the syntax, the rules of grammar etc. He started to divide these things into different groups and structual forms.
Around the same time there was also an outbreak of Language and Philosophy. Very Cool. People muust of started to realise the need to not just use and create with this awesome tool, but to understand why certain things worked and why certain things did not.
In these new studies of Language, different approaches were taken. Some, took a mathematical approach although this was whjen they first began to study language, as they got older and the Language progressed, their methods reverted to just studying the Language on it's merits. Basically doing away with the mathematical approach in favour of more structual studies.

It is interesting to note that going back as far as WWI and the late 20's, that propaganda was in full force, and that the media was already being used as a manipulative tool, to change social opinion, and sway public sediment.
I referr to the example given to the Lecture of Edward Bernaise in 1929. Who started a campaign of his own to get smoking to be deemed socially acceptable and 'cool' among young women. Using all the method's available to him. the likes of- Radio, Rally's, Placards at the rally's, chants and songs as they marched, Edward Bernaise would be successful in his own propaganda campain for, wsmoking was indeed accepted among society as cool and young women were no longer regarded as dirty for having indulged themselves in a cigarette.

I would like to think of this blog as a meme of my own, and hope a few vector's swing by and carry on some of my own thoughts and perhaps turn into meme's of their own as this semester progresses.

That's Musk out for week 2. But dont stress I will return.
